ANOTHER DAY at the OFFICE
Outstanding performances in all areas led to a very enjoyable Sunday for the Burgundy & Gold faithful, and ANOTHER failed trip to the Nation’s Capitol for the Detroit Lions. Every aspect of the Defense was strong, with Andre Carter delivering a standout afternoon. The secondary also performed well, giving Mike Martz’s high-powered offense nowhere to go. On the other side of the ball, the Skins' Offense was great, with Jason Campbell continuing to progress in both poise and execution. The Receiving Corps took another hit when Antwaan Randle El tweaked a hamstring on a long pass from Jason, but recent additions Keenan McCardell and Reche Caldwell contributed, with even Brandon Lloyd getting on the field. Mike Sellers, Clinton Portis, and Ladell Betts all contributed to the success of the Running Game, but there was a little bit too much sideline to sideline running for my tastes. Overall, it was a great afternoon and a much more impressive performance than a certain local team that will remain nameless . . . . .
Two surprise teams of this season square off this Sunday as our mighty, mighty Redskins travel to (queue Chris Berman) "the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field to take on Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers." While I hold no hope Brett will duplicate his first start against the Skins in 1991 – 5 interceptions in a 56 -17 Redskins’ rout – I believe this is a game we can and should win.
The Packers' defense, while much improved over the last season and a half, is still allowing an average of almost 20 points a game, and averages of 101 yards on the ground and 227 yards through the air. With Jason’s grasp of Al Saunders' offense growing on seemingly each play, he should have no problem keeping the Packer defense on their heels. I picked up Mike (I think I'll stand) Sellers on my fantasy team this week, and I look for him to play an important role again. Antwaan has said he will be ready to go, and hopefully Santana can get in on the fun.
When the Skins are on Defense, I know they're going against Brett Favre - - who is leading the NFL in yards, attempts and completions - - but the Packers' lack of a running game (54 yards per game) make them far too one dimensional, and our secondary can certainly handle Green Bay's receivers. Andre Carter is playing possessed (8 sacks in his last 9 games), and I look for him to harass Favre into a few of those "Brett-being-Brett" interceptions to set our offense up with a short field.
Speaking of Offense ~ ~ Congrats to Jason Campbell for being named NFC Offensive Player of the Week. Well deserved, and the first of many . . . . . . . . Romo, my rump!
The weather shouldn’t be an issue as the temp is predicted to be a lovely 60 degrees under cloudy skies . . . football weather!
So sit back, enjoy the game, and by the end of the day we will be in a virtual tie for first in the NFC East!
