The Plackemeier Era Begins With a Win!
Another week, another nail-biter . . . but this time the Redskins were able to hold on. After a first half with very little offense, in which newcomer Ryan Plackemeier served us well with some solid punting, the second half was where all the action happened. One week after the Cleveland offense absolutely torched the New York Giants . . . our defense held them in check all day! Carlos Rogers was a standout, making numerous outstanding plays on the bevy of weapons the Browns have at their disposal. Clinton Portis’ late fumble (right after the goal line defense made us cheer with a valiant stand) put us back against the wall, but we were able to withstand and get to everyone’s favorite play -- Jason Campbell kneeling down with the ball. With the Cowboys’ loss and continued unraveling, the Redskins are in a sweet position at 5-2 - - but CANNOT look past this weekend’s game.
And this week takes us to the “Motor City” to face the perpetually struggling Detroit Lions. They have lost a few of their claws lately, with QB Jon Kitna going on IR and WR Roy Williams selling his soul to join the Cowboys. We will deal with Mr. Williams next month when we beat the Cowboys again, but for now we have Mr. Dan Orlovsky at Quarterback and the spectacular Calvin Johnson at Wideout. The Lions’ running-back-by-committee setup of Rudi Johnson and Rookie Kevin Smith aren’t setting the world on fire, but they are still pro athletes that need to be accounted for. The defense the Lions put on the field is a few years and a couple of first round draft picks away from being decent, so we should be able to maintain some drives and put some points on the board. Watch for a very large dose of Clinton Portis all day long.
The Bye Week and some more interesting games are coming up down the road, but if I am not mistaken, we had a game like this against the Rams a couple of weeks ago and we all saw what happened when we took that one too lightly. We need to take advantage of the Cowboys’ current misfortunes and put some distance between us and them . . . as well as keep our Monday through Saturdays as pleasant as they have been the last couple of weeks when talking to friends wearing Blue and Silver! But we have to take care of business against bad teams like the Lions . . . and Git ‘Er Done!
