I just knew when…
Shaun missed the FG at the end of the first half, we were going to lose. I called my brother and told him so and waited for the inevitable. Our only hope was to get two scores ahead so that Dallas couldn’t “flip the switch” when they needed to and put together the one drive they needed to win. We couldn’t - - and they did. This was our playoff game in my eyes. If we could have beaten the evil empire at JerryWorld, it would have made the season almost bearable.
I would rather have surgery performed on me with a rusty butter knife than lose to Dallas, but one good thing came from this loss -- all the bloggers who talked of “running the table” after the Denver game have shut up and have hopefully realized that not only are we awful, but we will be awful for the foreseeable future until wholesale changes are made.
And given the current standing of our team in the NFL community, we might have trouble finding someone willing make those changes. Think about this - - - Danny approached Mike Shanahan earlier this season about our head coach position, but Shanahan told him he wouldn’t talk to anyone until after the season was over. Mike Holmgren rebuffed our advances as well. But yet Shanahan is talking with Buffalo this week, and Holmgren said he’d be interested in coming to the Browns.
These two would rather go to BUFFALO or CLEVELAND than come to DC!!!!!
Ouch…
I appreciate team loyalty as much as they next guy, but beating Denver was the AFC equivalent of beating us, and I hope that win -- coupled with Sunday’s close loss -- doesn’t give management cause for optimism. There isn’t any until Vinny goes.
The belief was it was the players . . . we have changed the roster more times than Jerry Jones has had face lifts. Okay . . . maybe it is the coaches . . . Turner, Robiskie, Schottenheimer, Spurrier, Gibbs and now Zorn. That is 6 coaches in 10 years. They’ve either not had enough time (Schottenheimer) or too much time (Spurrier & Zorn), but either way, he is the man who makes the decisions on coaches and players and clearly his decisions have been wrong.
Dallas won (I get nauseous just writing that) because their QB made the plays at the end when they needed him. Ours threw a pick (again!) when we needed him to drive us down the field. Dough Boy Phillips didn’t make any stupid coaching mistakes, and I felt Jimmy Z made a big one by going for the 50-yard FG instead of punting before their scoring drive. Of course injuries didn’t help -- I half expected to see Larry Brown or John Riggins come out of the tunnel for the second half.
These are Vinny’s guys, and Vinny and his guys must go before we can even think of being viable in the NFL again.
We travel to Philly this week to take on a team that came from behind to beat the Bears Sunday night. Westbrook (our #1 nemesis) won’t play due to post-concussion syndrome, but neither will Portis for the same reason. We will also be without Betts, who is on IR with ACL and MCL damage. We won in Philly last year, so maybe we catch lightning in a bottle again, but I think with our injuries and morale, you have to give the nod to Philly. But I WILL be screaming my lungs out for MY team!!!!
