You Know You Are a Fan of The Washington Redskins When…
1. The only reason you check ESPN.com is to see if your coach was fired.
2. Every winless team has their game against you circled as their “One Chance For a Win This Year.”
3. You are the object of pity in your workplace each Monday morning.
4. The Cowboys losing is almost as important to you as the Redskins winning . . . just so someone else can share your misery.
5. You start a letter-writing campaign to bring back Billy Kilmer/Sonny Jurgenson.
6. Thoughts of George Steinbrenner as our owner suddenly seem appealing.
7. Your annual end-of-the-season party is held in October.
8. You forward Vinny Cerrato job listings on Monster.com.
9. Your children think football game scores are capped at 17.
10. But, in spite of it all, you grit your teeth when walking out the door with your Burgundy and Gold gear on and hold your head high because we’re Redskin Fans, dammit!
You have to laugh at this point because our situation isn’t going to improve anytime soon.
What can I say about Sunday? To the casual fan, reading 20-17 in the box scores seems competitive. WRONG! We had scoring drives of 10 yards and 8 centimeters set up by our Defense, so the same problems of play-calling and execution are still there. Did you know the Eagles – who have played essentially the same schedule we have – have not only outscored us by 50 points, but have played one fewer game? Jim and Jason must go!
I know we have been beating this dead horse for weeks, but there is nothing else to say. If we’ve learned anything from the last season and a half, it is that the RIGHT coach and the RIGHT QB can have an immediate impact. Look at what is happening in Baltimore, Denver, and SF with their coaches. We have as much, if not more, talent than some of those teams, and yet we are regressing. We don’t “play to win,” we “play not to lose,” and that is the quickest way to lose in the NFL. That is the fault of our “in-over-his-head” Coach.
Jason, Jason, Jason. He has been in this league for FIVE years now, and still seems surprised at the speed of the game. After watching him in the pocket the past few weeks, the only thing I can come up with is this is his audition tape for Dancing with the Stars. He makes bad reads, bad throws, bad decisions . . . he can hand the ball off – when he isn’t fumbling it – so let’s be thankful for that. Todd Collins isn’t the long-term answer, but as he proved a few years ago, he can come in and manage a game and make the necessary throws. In the off-season, we (again) draft a QB and let Jason find fame and fortune in the free agent market. At this point in the season, I will settle for competitive, which we haven’t been up to this point, so let’s see what Todd has left in the tank.
This Week –
The Chiefs suck . . . and so do we . . . but someone has to come away from this without another mark in the loss column!
